Secular Badges
Secular badges were popular in the medieval period as either lover’s tokens or livery badges. All of the badges below are accurate copies of surviving pewter artefacts. For information on the history of secular badges please refer to the ‘History’ section of the website.
S8-Longbow badge
The meaning of this badge is by no means clear. It may well belong to a class of badge that proclaimed its wearer’s interest in a sport or activity, in this case of course, archery. Alternatively, it may be a love token; the bow and arrow being a popular medieval symbol of male virility!
